POWER Metro Mass Meeting March 12

At 7 PM on March 12, at the Reformed Church of the Ascension in Jeffersonville, a Mass Meeting will mark the formation of a new faith-based organizing group, POWER Metro.  POWER is an acronym for Philadelphians organized to witness, empower and rebuild.  The Metro group is based largely in Montgomery County.  Its goal is to pressure our state government for full and fair funding for Pennsylvania’s public schools.  POWER Metro includes UCC and other Protestant congregations, synagogues and Catholic parishes.  Full funding would increase the portions of funding the state supplies to run schools.  Currently Pennsylvania ranks forty-fifth in the portion of funding that the state supplies.  This leaves us heavily dependent on property taxes and means there are wide disparities in what communities can provide.  We are one of three states which lack a fair funding formula.  A fair funding formula ties aid to the cost of educating particular student populations, providing more for poor students, homeless students, ESL students and others who need more resources.  Everyone is invited to come to this mass meeting on March 12.  The church is located at 1700 W. Main St., Jeffersonville, PA 19403 (for GPS use “Norristown”).
