Ash Wednesday Service
with Woodcrest UCC
year our brothers and sisters from Woodcrest UCC joined us here at Glenside for
our annual Ash Wednesday service. This
year on Wednesday, February 10, at 7 PM, we will join them at Woodcrest UCC,
8107 Thouron Avenue, Philadelphia (at the corner of Thouron and Mt. Pleasant.)
It is just a few miles away from our church.
Our choir will sing. This is a
great opportunity to begin the season of Lent, a time to grow in our relationship
with God. It’s also an important chance
to connect with another United Church of Christ congregation.
Bad Things Happen to
Good People: a Bible study
book of Job is the story of a good man to whom all kinds of bad things
happen. We are not the first to wonder
where God is in all of this. On Thursday evening, February 4, at 7:30 PM, we’ll
begin a Bible study from the UCC “Listen Up!” series. We will meet on February 4, 18, 25, March 17
and 31 and April 7. All are welcome. If
you would like an optional study booklet, see Pastor Beth.
Welcoming Transgender People
When we surveyed our congregation before our Open
and Affirming vote, a subject that many people had questions about was what it
meant to be transgender. On Sunday,
February 14, we’ll have a potluck after worship and a discussion and some
activities to bring us to greater understanding. We’ll learn about transgender people,
including basic definitions of transgender types and how gender identity
differs from sexual orientation. Using
some materials from the Institute for “Welcoming Resources”, Bobbisue
Arrowsmith-Kopafeltz and Zack Levy-Dyer will provide leadership. There will be two more sessions. On March 13,
we’ll talk about the Bible and transgender people and our congregation’s
ability to welcome those with different gender expressions. On April 10, we’ll
explore what we can do to be as welcoming as possible.
